OVER 35 STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The O’35’s QLD Championship were successfully held at Labrador Hockey Club on the Gold Coast on Sat 9th and Sun 10th May. The final resulted in a 4-0 win to Ipswich over Brisbane.

The QLD team was announced which will play against NSW for the annual shield on the Sunshine Coast on 17th and 18th Oct. QLD has held this shield since the inception of the competition 3 years ago. Last year's competition was very tight and the minkies will have to be on their game to retain the title.

Following that warm up weekend, plans are positive for a 4 state competition between NSW, VIC, ACT and QLD in Melbourne during the Champions Trophy being held at the same time. The games will be at Footscray, with the Trophy games being held at Vic State Hockey Centre. The date for the Champions Trophy is 28th Nov to 6th Dec. So make your plans.

It was good to see Toowoomba bring a team to the weekend with some imports from Ipswich who they met 15 minutes before the first game. Additionally, Sunshine Coast had imports from Warwick. The future of this age group looks positive.

Vets’ is about participation for the enjoyment of game as well as trying to achieve personal fitness and state selection. There were many earnest conversations on the weekend over umpiring on and off the field. Some were resolved and some of the country guys will be talking to their umpires about what should happen (is that what we all do now). There were also conversations about sore limbs, but they seemed to get better over a beer. Some of the games may not have been as close as they wanted but given the smiles over the weekend everyone enjoyed themselves.

Thanks must go to Grant Smith and the Labrador Hockey Club team for providing the venue at such short notice.
